La cafeína estimula el sistema nervioso, aumentando la alerta y actúa bloqueando los receptores adenosinérgicos. 

Su efecto aparece entre veinticinco y cuarenta y cinco minutos desde su ingesta y se prolonga entre tres y siete horas.   Además la duración del efecto se incrementa con la edad.

El efecto de la cafeína depende de la hora en la que se consume, la cantidad y la habituación a tomarlo.

Incluso aunque puedas dormir después de tomar café, se ha observado que el sueño se mantiene en los estados más superficiales, por lo que la calidad del mismo se ve afectada.

No es recomendable dejar de consumir cafeína de golpe.
