Si se consume alcohol las horas antes de acostarse, se va a reducir el periodo de latencia, por lo que se va a tardar menos en quedarse dormido y durante la primera parte de la noche va a aumentar el sueño de ondas lentas.   Puede parecer que el alcohol ayude a dormir, pero la realidad es que en la segunda parte de la noche, cuando el alcohol se haya metabolizado, el sueño se va volver más superficial y se van a producir un aumento de despertares.  Por lo tanto, el sueño no va a ser de calidad. Además de la hora de la ingesta del alcohol, en el sueño también va a influir la dosis.  Generalmente, a mayor dosis de alcohol, mayores los efectos negativos en el sueño.
